You've Come this Far

I’m taking these multivitamins
Like they’re fucking pills,
Like they’ll fix this deceitful diet.
I’ve increased the dosage over time
Without a doctor’s consultation.

I’m popping St John’s Wart
To rid myself of this angst
Because at least if I think it works
It’ll be a placebo to my broken brain.

The message is lost in translation
And everything I say is drowned out
by a whining self-righteous deep understanding
and a jack hammer, concrete mixer,
the Top 40 and a bunch of council workers
who take a smoko every fucking ten minutes.

We’re all going to die from the smog;
The music and the 1 percent of sincerity will never save us
But at least we’re leaving this metal and concreted plastic trash
As a monument to how little we can achieve.

The government makes laws to break laws
And we’re pushed into a back corner
To be politically correct,
Not too far to the left.

We’ve all got our one secret vice,
To me it’s solitary confinement
And a lifelong dreaming state of
Heroes and villains
And sexy Sin City antiheroes with guns –
Prostitutes with contemptuous looks from the corner of one eye.

When will we go back to the beginning?
I hate to think we’ll become an endangered species
But can anyone tell me this won’t happen?

We don’t need aliens or beastly animals or natural disasters
Because we’re a self-imploding race,
We’ll do the dirty work ourselves.
